Founded in 1847 as a station along the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, Springfield has grown into a charming suburban bedroom community for Washington DC due largely to it's close proximity to all the major commuter arteries that come together here, as well it's easy access to the Sprinfield-Franconia Metro station and the Virginia Railway Express commuter lines.
The growing population of approximately 31,000 residents are largely employed in the federal civil service sector, military, and private contracting firms. The relocation of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency to the new east campus at Fort Belvoir is credited with expanding the local economy and luring additional contracting firms to build headquarters in Springfield.
